We at the Federal Association know that as a doctoral student in Germany, you may dream of a career in science and of spreading knowledge around the world. But often, behind the glamour of prestigious research institutes lies a grim reality that is characterized by uncertainty, pressure and challenges. A DW documentary shows that for many young scientists, this dream becomes a difficult path that often costs far more than it promises.
For us doctoral candidates, dependence on our supervisors is one of the biggest difficulties. Their goodwill determines the course of our research and therefore our future. It is no secret that this position of power is sometimes exploited, whether through a lack of support or even deliberate intimidation. In a documentary about the Max Plank Society, DW looked at specific problems faced by young scientists.
The workload is enormous. We are expected to devote ourselves fully to our research, often far beyond normal working hours. The feeling that our own work is never enough accompanies us and is reinforced by the lack of appropriate recognition or remuneration. Many of us feel burnt out, and yet it is almost impossible to openly address this burden.
The documentary shows how international researchers are often dependent on research group leaders, which makes them vulnerable to abuse. Many young researchers report intimidation, discrimination and a lack of support. Some are afraid to report abuses for fear of negative consequences for their careers. The few who dare to do so are often met with resistance or discouragement. The DW documentary takes a critical look at these systemic problems and calls for more transparency and accountability in Germany’s renowned research institutions.
As the German Association of Doctoral Candidates, we are of the opinion that such cases do not only occur at Max Planck Institutes, but that in many places doctoral candidates are overwhelmed by the ups and downs in academia. The systemic weaknesses addressed in the DW documentary reflect everyday life for many and show how urgently improvements are needed. It is time for research institutions to take seriously the perspective of those who form the basis for future innovations. Better working conditions are needed for all doctoral candidates.
